The Goliath SWIFT SILENT is an all-leather tactical police boot with new generation Gore-Tex membrane, manufactured by parent company YDS, which is lightweight and waterproof as well as being anti-static and slip-resistant.
The YDS Boot brand, of which GOLIATH Footwear is the British arm, can trace its history back 90 years to a business founded by a leather trader in Turkey. Today the Yakupoglu family still run what is now one of the largest technical footwear factories in the world. In case readers are wondering, Yakupoglu Deri Sanayi (YDS) is Turkish for Yakupoglu Leather Industry.
In 1971 the company commenced manufacturing patrol boots for the Turkish Police and since then it has not looked back, branching out into specialist fire & rescue service footwear and military combat boots, among other products. When in 2003 British footwear brand GOLIATH, established in 1880 and which had built a firm reputation for safety footwear, was put up for sale by the Cooperative Group the Yakupoglu family snapped it up to expand their expertise pool. Incidentally, on the military side, the YDS Kestrel and YDS Falcon patrol boot models were both issued in large quantities to UK Forces under the last MoD brown combat boot contract.
The GOLIATH Swift Silent tactical police model is one of the new generation of Gore-Tex Performance Comfort membrane boots designed to be both lightweight and waterproof as well as anti-static and slip-resistant. An all leather boot, made entirely from full grain cow hide, the Swift Silent is full height with nine pairs of lacing eyes of the tunnel type and with a lace lock at the mid position. Laces can be tucked away for neatness behind an outer collar flap which is held down by velcro-type pads and both collar and bellows tongue are padded.
This emergency forces boot has a dual density injected polyurethane / rubber sole system; the out sole rubber offers a combination of heat resistance to 300°C with high grip and abrasion resistance. The mid sole is polyurethane for flexibility and comfort and the excellent YDS moisture wicking, breathable and washable open cell polyurethane foot-bed is supplied; I often temporarily remove this make of foot-bed from other YDS boots and insert in boots with less comfortable inserts as, being diabetic, I need to take good care of my feet.
Although at first glance the GOLIATH Swift Silent appears to be quite a conservative blue light boot, and should not cause traditionalists (of which some Constabularies seem to have more than their fair share) any major concerns, when one looks closer it becomes apparent that the manufacturer has actually produced a technically advanced all-leather boot incorporating the latest breathable membrane and composite sole technologies.
As I have slightly larger than average feet, UK 10.5, though fortunately they are not as large as our Mr Gormley’s plates of meat, at 820 grammes my boots are a bit heavier than the weight quoted by the manufacturer for the industry standard. Even so, mine are quite light for this type of all-leather police boot.
Comment: It is not often that I wear a high police boot, so I did not foresee using these outside of the test period but as they are both light and comfortable they have seen more use than envisaged.
